Busy mum's guide to staying fit and healthy

Sometimes staying in shape seems like a lot of hard work - follow our 10 commandments to keeping slim and healthy while juggling everything life throws at you.

1. The housework workout

Cleaning, cooking and tidying can be so time consuming - so why not turn your chores into a workout? Clench your buttocks while you iron, do squats when you're picking things up from the floor and put some music on when you vacuum and get up a bit of a sweat!

2. Walk to the shops or the kids to school

Walking is really good for you. Fit it into your day however you can, even if it's just giving up the bus or your car to get the kids to school or to pop to the local shop.

3. Portion control

Make sure you're cooking the correct portion sizes for your family and there shouldn't be any leftovers to snack on.

4. Get your eating plan right

If you're constantly trying new diets to lose weight then you need to settle on one.

Once you have a plan you can live by, it will take a lot of time and energy out of losing weight.

5. Get lots of sleep

A good night's sleep will give you loads of energy and make you feel ready to face the day, but less than 10% of goodtoknow users regularly get 8 hours uninterrupted sleep a night.

6. Boost your metabolism

There are loads of simple ways to give your metabolism a kick, and they don't all involve time-consuming, exhausting exercise. Little changes like having spices in your diet, drinking green tea and cutting out sugar.

This will help you lose weight and give you loads of energy.

7. Snack healthily

When you're always on the go, it's easy to skip meals and snack on crisps and chocolate. Make sure you always have healthy snack alternatives in your cupboards. You can even keep some in the car or in your bag.

8. Have lots of sex!

You'll like this one...

Having lots of nooky is really good for weight loss.

Sex also makes you feel good as it releases endorphins, otherwise known as 'happy chemicals'.

9. Drink lots of water

Water is great for the body as it helps flush out toxins, does wonders for your skin and can help you lose weight.

By replacing sugary teas and coffees or cans of fizzy drinks with water, you'll also be reducing your calorie in-take, too.

10. Get your five-a-day

It often feels like a real hassle trying to cram in five lots of fruit and veg into your diet every day, but it doesn't have to be that hard going.
